From reading your posts in general and the fact that you are already a NY person, I find it interesting that LA would be your pref. (Not passing judgement or anything.) But I do find it curious.
Although it really does come down to personal preference. I know that Manhattan does get the reputation that you described, but I think honestly that might be based upon just visiting and not living there. I'm not this die hard city person, but it's def. not as single minded/cold as people seem to describe it sometimes. Busy and fast, yes.
Course, I think Albany is upstate, so my perspective is somewhat limited in general. And, I also don't live in Manhattan but in Queens. I get to go home to a house as opposed to walking up flights to a small apartment.

Although--about the pollution factor- has LA lost its smog somewhere and nobody told me?
