from different folks about epic. Originally I think it was sort of like project greenlight for comic book industry hopefuls. The inherant problem that I saw was since the writers and artists essentially act as the editors on their own books, no one's gonna sweat the deadlines. So aside from trouble, there will probably be 2 or 3 kick ass "first issues" followed by either cancellation or sub-par books that are months late. For instance if an artist gets "discovered" working on an epic title, they arent going to stick around and finish their run if someone actually offers to pay them for their work. and that isnt a dig on any of the writers or artists on the books, since the pay rate isnt really high enough for the creative teams to be able to afford to devote themselves to working on their books full time. I do like the idea of Marvel having an imprint that devotes itself to the type of stories you mentioned, but for it to work they would have to do it the way DC did in the 90's with Vertigo. Having professional artists and writers work on it. Also, if anyone has some great totally original concept involving their own characters, the legal agreement pretty much gives ownership to marvel. of course from what Ive heard its so tough to get a writing gig in comics these days it's pretty much a trade off between getting published and losing ownership, or never having your work see the light of day. Personally I like the idea and I hope it works out and some cool books get made, but Im skeptical about it working.
