... this will help...

(But remember, this is just an interpretation... But do I think I'm right?... of course I do!)

The first matrix was forced upon humans. But humans don't deal with information as machines do... as commands. Humans deal with information as choice. So when the first matrix was created, it was not a choice for humans. They were forced to be plugged in. But the humans rejected the system because they didn't have a choice. So they redesigned it. The Oracle helped at this point. She suggested to give the humans a choice to be plugged in. So the Architect did. But he gave them a choice at a subconscience level. So they weren't aware of the choice but it was there. So then the humans could, apparently, "choose" the matrix. They didn't reject it. But the problem with this system is... eventually a few WOULD become aware of the choice and they would want to be unplugged. And then this number would grow and grow until everyone would be unplugged.

So another solution was happened upon. They would give one of these humans the program to restart the matrix. This human would carry the program sort of like a reboot disk for the matrix. This human would be referred to as the one. So in the second or third matrix, as humans slowly unplugged themselves, they would go to the oracle and the oracle would gently lead them to "the one." (Remember, humans have to be able to CHOOSE their actions... so she couldn't just TELL them straight up to unplug the one. She had to tell them softly in half cryptic messages so that they would choose to unplug the one.) So in previous matrixes, this went just fine.

The one would eventually be unplugged, he would be guided back to the artchitect, (the source) and the architect would give him yet another CHOICE. He could either refuse to be the "reboot disk" and kill all of mankind (the left door) OR he could go back and choose a few people to help rebuild zion and the matrix (i forget... maybe JUST to rebuild the matrix) and he would hand over the code he carried that restarted the matrix. (the right door.)

See, if they just left the system unchecked, eventually everyone became unplugged.

So, the past five times, this all went smoothly, the one would go to the source, choose the right door and restart the matrix and save his spieces from extinct.

BUT... when the sixth reboot disk came along, there was something different. He was the first ONE to fall in love. This wasn't just a choice between doors. This choice got more complicated. So now it wasn't just kill all of mankind OR save a few and reboot matrix... it was kill all of mankind, save your love OR reboot the matrix. So for the first time, the one chose the KILL door, just to save his love.

Yes, if it weren't for smith, the humans would have nothing to negotiate with. Because the machines couldn't control smith, they had to make a deal with neo to get smith out of the matrix.

The oracle was never there to give permission, she was there to show them the choices they would make in the future. (I need to see the movie again but I don't think she could see the future this time... she had to let neo go and do what neo chose to do.)
