You should go as far and as high as you can to fulfill your own dreams, sure, of course.
But... Jesus fucking Christ, there comes a point where if someone doesn't wanna be found, you have to stop looking for them. That's all I was saying... or meant to say, I may have misworded it.
The point is: they weren't trying to do their own thing, follow their own dreams... they were trying to be the moon, trying to reflect some other sun's glory and... if the sun ain't playing that game, it's time to give up the moonshit and be your own star.
Kevin's a really open guy... if he had wanted a play adaptation of Clerks to be done by someone else, he would've left an avenue for it. He wouldn't have posted on multiple occasions on this board to people asking the exact same question: "I appreciate the compliment but no thanks. Write your own play."
As sad as giving up on your dreams are, it might be even sadder to think that you can only live your dreams through another.
You know that's what I meant, Sam, you've been around here more than long enough to know I don't play it that way.
He was trying to secure the rights to a play... in an unprofessional, inept way and when that unprofessional inept way failed, he went ahead and just did it.
I mean, I've always wanted to adapt Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano into a film... it's a dream of mine... but if I never get that opportunity because Kurt or (some day) Kurt's estate has sold the rights or don't want to sell the rights?
Then tough shit, Mike, go write your own damn movie.
If these guys dream is to do community theatre then... man, go for it. Go for it with an original work or a property that wants to grant them the rights. To move forward on something that the creator pretty obviously didn't want done? That goes beyond "plucky" and "never give up, never surrender" and moves right the hell on to "delusional" territory.
