I found the story slow to begin with as well, but it's crafted so amazingly well that you don't really see all the stuff going on as it happens. I got chills when I finished the series, and looking back on everything it all came together so beautifully, it was amazing. I remember a Neil Gaiman quote, I think it was Gaiman, where he said that the strangest thing about Watchmen was that they (Moore and the artist whose name I should know) put something together that was far larger and impressive then they had even seemed to realize.
