I think Jim Carrey could have done it, but Johnny Depp is a great choice. Very unexpected and delightful. It'll be fun to see him work with kids.

It'll be interesting, but I think Burton will turn in something a bit darker and more twisted than the book's original spirit (although, he could surprise me). I wish that he would do the sequel instead, CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR. That book is weirder and more disturbing than the first, and Burton would be perfect for it.
