: : I am aware of Emo's origins and history, but do YOU realize that grunge music generated a larger fanbase (in terms of population percentage) than Emo ever has and that the four major grunge-era bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and The Smashing Pumpkins) have individually sold more records (again, in terms of population percentage) and won more awards and critical praising than the majority of Emo bands (put together) ever have?

: They were a punk band.

They had punk influences, yes, but their musical sound was defined as grunge.

As for the Smashing Pumpkins, I could be wrong, but I think he just meant 'grunge-era'. Meaning that they came out in that era & not necessarily were grunge sounding (which they're not).
