: ... seeing all those guys running around with their mixolydian this and phyrgian that.

you just took me right back there...kicking, screaming, and spandex clad. it’s amazing the type of theory these guys could amass and digest if it meant something incredibly fast and slightly goth/classical would spring forth from it, yet nary a one of them could actually read a piece of music.

: I once went to a GIT clinic right near the end of high school and decided that if I had stayed for just one more hour, I would've wanted to kill all of those Paul Gilbert wannabes.

paul gilbert is a class act, btw. i've never met a more modest and unassuming musical genius...and for the time, he surely was. did you ever get a chance to see his band 'the electric fence' play? they made made mr. big look like talus!

: But I'd bet being the only four-stringer around was fun for you, because playing in a band there probably meant just playing along with the stupid guitar player's unduly-complicated songs.

being a bassist who wasn’t trying to compete either in their register or at their tempo, and who could also actually keep time was basically a passport to constant work, if i wanted it. sadly i quickly tired of the scene, packed up my hair, and returned to western new york with my ibanez between my legs.

then again, where else would it be? it’s a guitar, the most musical penis extension ever conceived.

: Wait, do eight-minute guitar solos with cursory drums and bass count as "songs"?

masturbatorial exercises in harmonic excess would be a be a better working title...
