: However, glorious, glorious Friday, will you never come!
I've downshifted from being a rabid ViewAskew fan, thanks to CHASING AMY, to being a casual Kevin Smith admirer at about the time that DOGMA: SPECIAL EDITION started collecting dust on the shelf. I'm happy for your man. He has a world of talent and the fact that some in the darkness might want to see they can make him eat shit for his earnestness is beside the point.
Now, I'm not a huge fan of driving out to the county to see a major, commercial release although since Baltimore has no commercial multiplexes, this is usually what I have to do if a big studio puts out a wide release that I simply have to see right away. Imagine my relief when I discovered that Baltimore's newly re-opened Rotunda cinema is going to be opening JERSEY GIRL on Friday. This tiny theater, tucked away inside the quaintest of old-school, class C shopping malls is a mere 30-minute walk around the Johns Hopkins University campus from where I live. Not only do I not have to drive out to the ubermall to pay homage to a film which, sight unseen, has a weirdly magical quality to it for me, but I will be able to walk on a 60-degree evening, perhaps popping into One World Cafe, a vegetarian-oriented eatery and watering hole, before heading over to the show (and, almost certainly, popping back in afterwards, to digest what I saw and experienced with a cold one or two).
Trees, a warm breeze, college kids and JERSEY GIRL in an unpretentious, tiny, old-school, two-screen movie house! The promise of this night has me so tickled that I actually DREAMT about it last night!
Sure, the new Coen Bros. flick will be playing next door, but Friday night belongs to Kevin Smith: classy, literate filmmaker and accidental, sensitive ladykiller.
You, I and everyone else with a mind to know it are damned lucky to have this gentleman on our side.
