There is a difference between people choosing to "worship" Kevin Smith, as you put it, and having an icon or an idol pushed upon you, as in the case of Mooby. Mooby is synonymous with other icons in popular culture, such as various Disney and Warner Bros. characters, and of course, Pokemon (the gateway drug for Magic: The Gathering).
There is a difference between propitiating fictional characters and praising a man who has worked hard, earned success, and deserves our support. One could argue that simply because Mooby is fictional, that to worship him would be a sin. While Kevin Smith, who is probably pretty damned real, is a man, and therefore a creation of God, and is worthy of respect and reverence.
At the risk of taking this argument to a much more theological level than I would like, I should point out that one of the precepts Smith brings up in Dogma is that while the Bible represents the voice of God, it was still written by the hand of man, and is therefore subject to fallacy. Since Mooby was a character created by man, and used to further the financial whims of man, THAT is why it is a Sin to worship it. But to honor and respect Kevin Smith, and so may go as far as to say they worship him, are not misdirecting their praise, as he is a creation of God.
If you believe in that sort of thing.
