it's just one of the those things we can only speculate on.
what i think is that they went to hell. it was stated earlier that this would happen, and so it must happen. otherwise reality would be wiped out; in case you missed the whole point of Bethany & Co. going to stop them in the first place.
as for the second question, not really sure. Not up on Milton. Though in case you are interested To Reign In Hell by Steven Brust is a real good treatment of this subject. Not that you can find it, but if you can, buy it. it is one of the best books i have read.
