When I was young I read the first two DUNE books, but for the life of me I can't recall many details of them (although I recall not much happening in DUNE MESSIAH- actually, in light of that it might be an easier book to adapt than the first one was). I really, really love Lynch's film version of DUNE- again however, I don't recall much of the novel so I'm not commenting on it as an "adaptation"- I just find it to be an almost magical film, one that can be hard to follow if you don't pay attention, but very rewarding if you do. I'm also in the minority here, but I really like the internal-monologue voice-overs- Lynch took a lot of heat for them, but I think they work very well, and do a good job of voicing things that might otherwise be "unadaptable" from book to screen. It's very literary to "hear" what the characters are thinking, but in light of DUNE's origins as a novel I think it works well myself.
