That's upsetting. And "Armageddon" was one of those ones that just makes you go "huh?"...I mean, it's more upsetting for a kid to see a third nipple than to see the world get blown up? Or like, the Austin Powers flicks aren't just as suggestive as the Askewniverse movies (although less realistic, given)?

We live in a sick society.

I'm with you...give people information about the actual content, not just some arbitrary letter that means very little. Plus, who the hell is on the MPAA rating board anyway? How many people, of what age and demographic? And how subjective is their opinion?

Gladiator kicked my ass to the moon and back. It was fan-fucking-tastic. I swore after "Private Ryan" that I'd have no more of war/action flicks that make blood & gore beautiful, but this one I just couldn't resist, and it didn't disappoint. Although as Erik said, it did hurt the eyes after a while. But Russell Crowe is the Sex Lord of the USA, and he's taking over Hollywood like those giant ants take over Tokyo on late night Sci-Fi theater.

Queen of Rant, impressed at this fine showing.

: Okay. That truly pisses me off.

: Be warned: This starts off as more of a personal tirade than anything remotely coherent.

: We couldn't show Army of Darkness in the store when I worked at Suncoast because it was rated R. It was rated R because Ash says "Fuck" 3 times in the movie (You can't even hear it. Try and remember Ash saying Fuck and you'll understand what I'm saying) and there's 2 naked women (on screen for no more than 3 seconds, and they're quite well covered.).

: What I don't understand is why Armageddon can be PG-13 and have more swears than Army of Darkness? I don't understand why Coyote Ugly can have tits in it than Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (R for nudity, violence and language) and still be PG-13.

: Star Wars: Episode 1 had someone being cut in two, 3 animals getting their heads torn off, and thousands of CGI characters being killed, yet it got a PG rating. Raiders of the Lost Ark is rated R ( I believe, I could be wrong.), yet it has no more violence in it than Mars Attacks, which was rated PG-13 and featured Martians slaughtering hundreds of people.

: Why have a ratings system at all if you won't stick to the set of guidelines you created for it? The MPAA makes all these rules about why a movie is rated what it is, yet often ignore them because of a personal vendetta against the director or some personal mission to keep something they think isn't very good out of theaters.

: I think rapper Eminem has got it right when he says in "The Real Slim Shady":

: Sometimes I wanna get on TV and just let loose,
: but can't, but its cool for Tom Green to hump a dead moose
: my bum is on your lips, my bum is on your lips
: and if I'm lucky you might just give it a little kiss
: and that's the message that we deliver to little kids
: and expect them not to know what a womens clitoris is.
: Of course they gonna know what intercourse is
: by the time they hit 4th grade,
: they got the discovery channel don't they?

: That basically sums up the whole situation nicely. Why bother rating things and saying they're for adults when kids probably know the same amount of information on the subject?

: I don't know. I don't have enough time to type up my whole tirade against the MPAA right now, but I did take the time once to devise a new ratings system which would work much better. I called it the Think For Yourself ratings system. It was a lot like Isis' idea of just saying what was in the movie (Blood, Gore, Nudity, Sex, etc.) and letting people decide for themselves what they should and shouldn't see.

: And, lastly, Gladiator was a hell of a movie. It was the first 3 hour long epic I've sat through since Braveheart and not felt like taking a nap during.

: Striving hard to be an "R".
