Sorry to detract from the questions of masturbation and why Empire is clearly a better film than the original Star Wars or the Muppetfest Jedi, but I would like some advice.

In trying my hardest to create my first film (which is still being written), I'm bombarded with people constantly telling me, "You'll never make it." or "You can't make a decent living at it." -- They just do not understand the "passion" I have for it. (Calling it a passion sounds very faggy, but I know no other word to describe the overwhelming drive to create) They do not see the field as credible for money, they see it as competitive and risky, and impossible for new people to get involved. In an effort to appease them, and make myself look more "student-ly" I'm even considering film school so that I have a piece of paper on the wall certifying that I did something academic.

My question: What is the best way to handle all the people who say you can't do it? Do I just not listen? Do I laugh heartily in their faces while at the same time defiantly challenging their assumption? Do I just tell them to F off and do what I feel I'm good at?
