I think actors have to know when they've signed on to a shitty movie. I know some actors do it for the cash to make up for the money lost when they do good flicks. Cage says he did Con Air to make money so he could do things like Leaving Las Vegas. But I don't know if all that's true or if he's just trying to cover his own ass for doing a shitty film.
As for producers... I think they just put out whatever they know someone will go see. They look at a shitty project, get a big name star attached and they know they'll make some money.
Directors and writers I think are a different story. Directors I'm sure at times will do shit for money. Emilio Estevez did Mighty Ducks 3 only because he got Disney to back a picture that he wanted to direct. Of course... he acted in MD3, but whatever.
For the most part though... I think that directors are into their work, or if not, they just Alan Smithee the bitch.
Writers I feel a lot of times with bad movies, didn't write a bad movie. But rewrites and actors and directors can ruin this vision. I don't know though, because if someone gave me a shitload of cash, I'd write the next Batman and Robin. "You want gay? I can do that."
It all comes down to cash. I think if there's major cash involved in a project, and it's bad... odds are the actor/writer/director is laughing all the way to the bank. If it's low budget and it's bad.... I think they think it's good.
Shit I could have just written that last paragraph.
