Kevin actually wrote DOGMA before CHASING AMY, and if you look at the two films, DOGMA has more "slapsticky" moments of humor, but also has a very dramatic edge. CHASING AMY has humor, but not really of the slapsticky kind and the tone is more dramatic than even DOGMA. If you watch the two films in the order of DOGMA first and then CHASING AMY, you can see that progression in his writing. Due to budgetary issues as well as Kevin's personal desire to be a "more mature" filmmaker when he tackled DOGMA, he decided to wait to make it, even though it was written before CHASING AMY. JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK was basically a throw-back to the balls-to-the-wall humor of MALLRATS and CLERKS- after the more dramtic DOGMA, Kevin wanted to step back and make a movie that was simply a whole lot of fun as a way to "close the book" of the ViewAskewniverse before he moved on to the drama of JERSEY GIRL, which is tonally much more in line with CHASING AMY.
