The speed of light is a measurable, variable thing. It depends on the atmosphere through which it is travelling. I know in my Gas Dynamics class we dealt with problems when the compressed gas would reach velocities great than the speed of light. So I don't think it's an asymptote in the same sense Absolute Zero is.
