This must be an ancient debate here and a rather pointless one since the movie has long been in the can but I still say the original ending was the best. People do get killed in convenience store robberies you know? It happens all the time so how can it be bleak and pointless to simply show the reality of it. Real life is always a mixture of tragedy and comedy. To say that the two don't belong together in a film is to underestimate the medium.

Instead of feeling that they were trying to be too edgy and artistic with the original ending (as if such a thing is possible :), I wonder if they weren't trying to be too commercial when they changed it to a happy ending like every other fucking Hollywood movie in existence. Just try imagining Easy Rider, or Romeo and Juliet, for that matter, with out the deaths at the end! Now that would bleak and pointless.

I can't help but think that they had a choice their to choose between films that would be great works of art and between films that would have commercial success and they chose the path to get rich.

I guess it's a matter of whether you like your films to take chances or to play it safe. Anyway if both endings are on the DVD so pick your favorite and forget the other ;)
