: I lost my wallet back in 1992 and someone found it and was able to rack up over 20,000 of charges on credit cards I didn't own. I only found this out about a year ago. I had to hire an investigator to find out who the person was cause the police had no way of tracking them. They used a public computer to make purchases. They finally caught the bastards but now I have a fraud alert on my name for the next 5 years and that means I cannot make any purchases without showing 3 forms of ID....Making internet purchases is almost impossible for me cause I have to call the merchant from my home phone and tell them that yes, it is me.

: Don't do it...if you have friends or family members with a computer ask them to make the purchases for you.

of the customer incurring fraudulent charges are slim to none. The merchant is the one who has to pay (not the credit card company like most people think). All credit card companies have zero liability for customers -- especially Internet customers. It's unfortunate that you had a problem that still haunts you but it's unlikely something like that would happen today.
