First off, Warner isn't fiddling around with region encoding and it's not new. It is a DVD standard and has existed since the inception of DVD over 4 years ago. Besides, you can't watch NTSC in Europe. only PAL. That is unless you get a VCR that does both and converts it.
Second, why don't you buy a DVD player without region encoding? Pioneer makes at least one model. I'm sure there are others. Better yet, get a DVD-ROM, none of which have region encoding by default.
Third, I think it's mainly because we don't like Europeans. The US is the sole remaining super power and all. And we always have to come to the aid of foreign countries, we run NATO, we force everyone to speak English (and not the messed up British English), and we create all the good movies. We should be able to do things our way without stinky Europeans bugging us. (This is a little fun humor by the way.)

Take Fight Club as a example, the American version has two discs and is filled with extras... the European version? No extras(one disc version), and it costs around 30$ bucks.. i payed 21 for my Reg.1 Fight Club. I would be a idiot to not buy the reg.1 version.
