I don't blame the lack of gradual lovestory build up on Hayden...he's trying to sell that baby every which way, putting on the mojo and whatnot. I really feel like Natalie Portman acts as though she's in a more subtle movie, and she downplays the whole thing. So she's got this ice queen demeanor the whole time, like she doesn't notice the dude, and then she's all suddenly in love. Natalie's not playing what isn't on the page, and that's the problem. I don't blame her, granted that the script is cheesy and the way they shoot these movies doesn't make it easier on the actors, but still.

I don't get your Obi-Wan point, I thought their relationship came across rather well. That's mostly due to Ewan relaxing a lot from the last movie. He's much less of a talking head in this one.

: I realized that the only real problem the movie has is the way that it portrays Anakin. It comes across fine that he'll be Vader, but we never see why Padme would possibly fall for him, and we never see any of the respect that Obi-Wan later clearly has for him, but that's because of the way he's written. It ain't Hayden's fault, it's just a badly written part. George probably doesn't know how to write convincing bad guy backstory.
