Alright folks, I'm sure you know what "The Criterion Collection" is - basically it's an indie home video distributor that puts out classic/important films, using the best picture and sound technology can afford at the tme and piling on as many extras as the film deserves/has surviving.
They were quite a reckonable force in the days of Laserdisc and early DVD, when no-one else was doing Special Editions (at least, not as good as CC was).
But today? Nearly every new film is coming out as a Special Edition, and even those discs NOT proudly displaying a "buy-me-now-edition" banner typically have excellent picture and sound, amid many features.
Criterion doesn't put out that many recent films anymore - is it in danger of being ignored as just another special edition provider? I would think that soon, only the collectors willing to pay the high prices will keep it afloat. If CC ever went under, it would be a sad blow to classic films that might otherwise never have gotten the release they deserved.
Anyone else have an opinion on this?
