: I ask this as well. To what end did Jude Law serve? What connection could there POSSIBLY be between the 2 charachters?? A sex bot and a "mecha" programmed to think he was a real boy and thus feel an undying love to his "mother". Not exactly Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton. What was the meaning of the FLESH FAIR? Seems a bit too primitive for a society intelligent enough to have the MECHAs in the first place.

We continually advance as a "species"- look at all of our technical innovations... and yet, look at what passes as "entertainment".
Pro-Wrestling.

"Reality" T.V.

Movies like SCARY MOVIE.

Need I say more? I see nothing unrealistic about the Flesh Fair.

As for the "connection" between Gigolo Joe and David, it's more a matter of circumstance, of the two of them being in the right place at the right time.

: And if , in fact, it had it's place in such a society then the idea of the crowd turning on Brendan Gleeson( throwing fruit at him of all things)simply does not hold up.

I did think they turned on him *TOO QUICKLY*, however I didn't find it "unrealistic" in light of the fact that David really LOOKED like a human boy and was begging for his "life", something no other mecha had ever done.

: Are we supposed to believe an android has no self preservation skills as well?? To ignore Asimov's Rules of Robotics, after virtually every film of the last 40 years dealing with the idea of artificial lifeforms followed them closely, is inexcuseable.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. I thought the robots in A.I. *DID* try to preserve themselves, i.e. replacing old parts in the dump, and fleeing when the Flesh Fair was near.

: I felt ( and saw) nothing real in David's relationship to his "mother" and as a result felt nothing when she left him in the woods.

I think there needed to be a scene or two more showing Monica bonding with David, but the film makes clear that the moment Monica speaks the seven words, David is forever and irrevocably bonded to her. HIS love for her was very real and very strong- maybe you didn't buy her feelings for him totally, but imagine how it felt from David's standpoint, being abandoned like that.

: When DAVID goes apeshit and smashes the "other" David........you ask why?? Where did THIS emotion come from? If he had the capeability all along why not direct it @ Martin??

This is explained by Dr. Hobby- David has "surpassed all his expectations" and has actually BUILT UPON the "A.I." that was implanted in him to begin with. As the film progresses and he continues on his quest, he becomes more and more "human" so to speak, and at the end when confronted by a duplicate of "himself" he's compelled to destroy it. David never felt or evidences any real animosity towards Martin- Martin was the one who had a problem with David, and tried to get him in "trouble". So why WOULD David direct such anger towards Martin?
